"Once, there was a little boy who was warned not to play with fire. He was fascinated by fires and couldn't resist so he ran away from home to make a fire in secret. He gathered everything he needed and began. As the little flame burned away and came to life it whispered to the boy. It asked him to feed it. The boy was excited and mesmerised by the flame and did as he was told. The fire burned away happily. After a short while the boy couldn't find anything else to burn. He got bored and turned to walk away. The fire whispered to him again, this time it told him to put his hand in the fire. The boy did as he was told and the fire burned him! The boy angrily stamped out the fire and started to walk home. He didn't notice that the little flame had survived by burning a hole in his shoe. It stayed there glowing. The little flame whispered to the boy again. This time it told him to take a short cut through the field with the dead grass. He was late home and thought that this would be a good idea. As he walked home the little flame burned away at the dead grass without the boy noticing. It was getting later and later and the boy found himself lost and began to worry, so again the little flame whispered telling him to take another short cut through the woods. Once more, without hesitation the boy did as he was told. He ran through the woods and the little flame burned away at the dead leaves and branches without the boy noticing. Later still and the boy has no idea which way is home. Frightened, he heads towards the first familiar sound he hears. He can hear running water and decides that he should run for the river. The little flame tries to calm the boy down but the boy keeps running. Eventually he comes to the river and stops exhausted but relieved. The greedy little flame looks around the river bed for something that takes its fancy. Eventually it spots an old wooden bridge and gets very excited. He calms the boy and whispers that he should get to the other side of the river and take his time. The boy heads for the bridge and as he gets to the middle the little flame cries out and tells him to stop! The little flame is overwhelmed by the bridge and makes up all kinds of reasons why the boy should wait on the bridge. The boy is lost and scared but stands still anyway. The little flame digs in to the bridge and as it gorges deeper and deeper into the thick dry wood the bridge begins to give way. The boy doesn't have the time to move before the bridge collapses and he falls into the water with pieces of the smoking bridge! The little flame is extinguished, and the boy, who is now soaking wet, remembers that the way back home is upstream."
2/ 'Little Flame' (Elle S'Appelle) - the song:
I'm not ever supposed to, ever supposed to but I will anyway I'm not even allowed to, even allowed to so I will go away I will hide in the garden, hide in the garden so that they think I'm playing I will bring it to life, and give it a name, I'll call it a little flame I need more for the fire, more the fire, more for the fire wood There is nothing around, there's nothing around there's nothing that's any good I will reach for the ember, feel the ember wonder if it's still hot It burns! I'm putting an end to, putting an end to, how do I make it stop? I will follow you around, will follow you around.. I am out in the open, out in an opening but I don't know where I've been hearing a whisper, hearing a whisper whispering in the air I should be getting home now, be getting home before I get lost again I can hear running water, I'll go towards it but I am lost and scared I will follow you around, will follow you around.. I will follow you around, will follow you around.. Whoa! So pristine and fine look at it I think we should just wait a little longer here, see how it is Whoa! So rich and sublime a classic I don't believe that I have had the pleasure yet, so I'll dig in.
