Why can't I ever say what I mean?

Mais de metade do tempo que dedico a ouvir música é destinado a ouvir música nova; isto é, discos novos, bandas novas. A outra menos que metade, é aproveitada a ouvir os Fall e uma série de outros grupos/discos que apareceram entre 1977 e 2000, sendo que a grande maioria do tempo que resta dessa menos-que-metade-menos-os-Fall é passada a ouvir coisas que aparecerm entre 80-81 e 89. Nos últimos dias ouvi muito estes dois magníficos discos; aliás, desde que os conheci – à altura das respectivas edições em 87 e 89 - nunca me cansei de os ouvir e acho que são dos melhores discos que conheço. Se por acaso não lhes puseram os ouvidos em cima, ou andam há que tempos para lhes dar a atenção que acham que eles podem merecer mas vão adiando para outro dia, aproveitem este dias de chuva para ouvir as melhores guitarras do final da década de 80, a melhor pop inglesa pós-Smiths.

It can only be a matter of bad timing that "Bizarro" wasn´t hailed as a groundbreaking rock record on it´s release.
It appeared at a time when The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays were shuffling in the Ecstacy-addled baggy scene and only American bands were allowed to make dirty great guitar records without a trace of funky Drummer. In the Second Summer Of Love of 1989 a loud, angry, angsty guitar pop record seemed out of time, way off the groove maaaaan. It´s only in retrospect - and on the other side of grunge. fraggle, New Wave of New Wave and britpop scenes wich, to a lesser degree, stole from it - that is true value can be assessed.
"Bizarro" was the point where British guitar music realised it could be tuneful and enormous. It set a blueprint that was stuck to by legions of alternative rock bands for the next decade. It was, quite simply a pop album the size of Pluto and with as devastating an effect if it hit you in the gut. And without its lingering influence on rock music, Belle and Sebastian would currently rule the world. And that would really be heartbreaking.
